Resolution= on Palestine
Passed by the United Antiwar Conference (UNAC)=2C
July = 23-25=2C 2010=2C Albany=2C New York
--------
"Principle requires the antiwar movement take further steps in putting= the rights of Palestinians=2C and opposition to US support for Israeli vio= lations of their rights and war waged against them=2C at the center of our = discussions=2C our demands=2C and our activities."
---= -----
Whereas:

When antiwar movements in the U.S. have= been at their best=2C they have been motivated not only by opposition to t= he blood shed and the money wasted in unjust wars=2C but also by opposition= to the violation of the right of self-determination suffered by the people= s against whom such wars have been waged.

This principle requires th= e antiwar movement take further steps in putting the rights of Palestinians= =2C and opposition to US support for Israeli violations of their rights and= war waged against them=2C at the center of our discussions=2C our demands= =2C and our activities.

This dire need has also been made both more = necessary=2C and more possible=2C by the horrific and criminal attack by Is= rael on the people of Gaza in 2008-2009=2C which opened further the eyes of= billions around the world to the crimes of the Zionist regime.

Our = government's support for the apartheid regime in Israel is part and parcel = of its "war on terror=2C" and more broadly of its centuries-long string of = wars and occupations designed to extend and maintain U.S. economic and stra= tegic dominance. $3 billion in U.S. aid go every year to maintaining a regi= me founded on the ethnic cleansing of the vast majority of Palestinians fro= m their land and homes=2C who are still denied their inherent right to retu= rn. This aid also goes to permit continued land theft and ethnic cleansing= =2C discrimination and imprisonment=2C and violations of civil and politica= l liberties. And it goes for such military aggressions as the attacks on Le= banon in 2006=2C on Gaza in 2008-9=2C for the murder of humanitarian aid ac= tivists on board the recent Free Gaza flotilla=2C and the threats of milita= ry attack=2C including the possibility of using nuclear weapons=2C against = Iran.

Our government's responsibility for these crimes does not end = with the dollars in aid given. It extends also to the training carried out = by US General Keith Dayton of security forces used to repress dissent by Pa= lestinians=2C as well as to the technical and personnel aid given to Egypt = to help build a wall to try to stop goods being carried through tunnels to = Gaza to break the Israeli blockade.

US support extends further to di= plomatic support for that blockade=2C to diplomatic support for Israel's re= fusal to address any of the Palestinians' just demands=2C to blocking any U= N rulings against Israel=2C and to giving diplomatic cover to phony Israeli= "peace initiatives."

Washington's support also includes labeling of= forces resisting occupation - such as Hamas and Hezbollah - as "terrorists= ." 87 Senators recently demanded that the Turkish charity IHH be added to t= he "terrorist list." In all cases this is a clear violation of the rights o= f the peoples of the region to decide for themselves who to support in thei= r fight against aggression and occupation. And the list is also used to sup= press dissent within the US against Washington and Tel Aviv's policies - a = suppression taken a very dangerous step further by the Supreme Court's rece= nt ruling in the Holder case outlawing virtually every form of contact=2C e= ven promoting nonviolence or support for charitable work=2C with any group = on the list.

For all these reasons=2C this Conference Resolves:
<= BR>** To end all US aid to Israel=2C which is key to achieving the followin= g points on which we are resolved=3B

** To condemn the murders of hu= manitarian aid activists on board the Mavi Marmara ship=2C the beatings and= detention of flotilla activists=2C and the illegal seizure of ships in the= Free Gaza flotilla in international waters. We further resolve to publiciz= e and support future aid flotillas and convoys=2C and to strongly protest a= ny aggression against them that may occur=3B

** To endorse the call = of Palestinian Civil Society=2C as expressed in its July=2C 2005 Call=2C si= gned by hundreds of Palestinian refugees=2C human rights and cultural organ= izations and unions=2C to support a world-wide campaign of "Boycott=2C Dive= stment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel Until it Complies with Internatio= nal Law and Universal Principles of Human Rights".

** To support the= annual international Israeli Apartheid Week in March calling for Solidarit= y in Action: Boycotts=2C Divestment and Sanctions.

** To urge all or= ganizations and individuals to mobilize in protest against any military att= acks launched by Israel=2C whether against Palestinians inside pre-1967 Isr= ael=2C in the West Bank or Gaza=3B against Lebanon or Iran.

** To ca= ll for the release of all 11=2C000 Palestinian political prisoners held in = Israeli jails. We further resolve to call for the release of all Muslim and= Arab prisoners held on US soil or in US bases abroad (Guantanamo=2C Baghra= m etc.) who are victims of pre-emptive prosecutions as part of Washington's= anti-Muslim=2C anti-Arab war propaganda=3B

** To demand that Israel= end its illegal occupation of the West Bank=2C Gaza=2C and E. Jerusalem=2C= remove all settlements=2C and dismantle the Apartheid Wall=2C declared ill= egal by the International Court of Justice.

** To reject the aparthe= id-like practices of discrimination against Palestinians=2C including denia= l of their right to return to their homes=2C both in the territories seized= in 1967 and in pre-1967 Israel. We call for full equality for the Palestin= ian citizens of Israel=2C which means the dismantling of all laws that disc= riminate against non-Jewish citizens=2C and which violate international law= and UN resolutions seeking to enforce that law on behalf of the Palestinia= ns=3B

** To demand the immediate end of the siege of Gaza. This mean= s a total end of all Israeli attempts to interfere in any way with the free= movement of goods and people=2C no matter what or who they may be=2C in an= d out of Gaza=2C whether by land=2C sea or air=2C and no matter their desti= nation or point of origin.

** To encourage the antiwar and other soc= ial movements to continue education on the linkage between Washington's ant= i-Palestinian policy and its other wars and support for occupation abroad a= nd exploitation and oppression at home. In this regard we second the points= made in the document approved by the 15=2C000 in attendance at the recent = US Social Forum: ". . .for an end to U.S. interventions and occupations in = Palestine=2C Haiti=2C Iraq=2C Afghanistan=2C Pakistan=2C Somalia=2C Colombi= a=2C etc . . .We call on all organization and social movements to boycott= =2C divest and sanction the Israeli apartheid state and the institutions th= e support it."

** To support the U.S. BOAT TO GAZA.=2C THE AUDACITY = OF HOPE=2C which will be part of the next Freedom Flotilla as part of the i= nternational effort to break the blockade of Gaza and to end the occupation= of Palestine.

** To work with all forces anywhere who agreed on the= points in this resolution.

On September 26 - we support th= e Bolivarian revolution
Tuesday=2C 17 August 2010 16:02
Faced with the elections to the national assembly in Venez= uela on September 26=2C we the undersigned would like to show our internati= onalist support and solidarity with the Bolivarian revolution:
  • because it has =3Bcourageously =3Bstood up to imperialism
  • because it has invested the money from the oil revenue in the =3Ber= adication =3Bof =3Billiteracy and the extension of education at all= levels
  • because it has made a gigantic effort in extending health care to the p= oorest sections of society with the Mision Barrio Adentro
  • because it has started a process of expropriation of the latifundia and= the redistribution of land
  • because it has faced the monopoly of the mass media and moved towards t= he democratisation of access to the media
  • because it has reverted the process of privatisation of state owned com= panies and utilities and has renationalised some of those which had been pr= ivatised
  • because it has dared to occupy abandoned factories and put them to work= under workers' control
  • because it has started to introduce workers' control in the basic indus= tries
  • because it has raised the banner of socialism in the 21st century
  • because a defeat of the revolution would mean an advance of imperialism= =2C the oligarchy=2C the land owners and capitalists=2C of those who organi= sed the coup in April 2002
  • because the revolution has not yet been completed
for these and many more reasons=2C we support the Bolivarian revolutio= n and the candidates of PSUV in September 26 and we remain alert to counter= the campaign of lies and provocations on the part of imperialism and the c= ounter-revolution.

The Toronto Palestine Film Festival (TPFF) is excited to announce the opening night film for this year's Festival.

The Time That Remains

The festival will open on Saturday, October 2nd, with the acclaimed 2009 Cannes Official Selection, The Time That Remains. By Divine Intervention director Elia Sulieman, The Time That Remains is a beautifully shot semi-autobiographical film, in four episodes, about a family from 1948 until recent times. This deeply personal film is inspired by Sulieman's father's private diaries, starting when he was a resistance fighter in 1948, and his mother's letters to family members forced to leave the country. Using his trademark wit and satire, Sulieman portrays the melancholy and absurdity of the daily life of Palestinians who remained and were labelled "Israeli-Arabs", living as a minority in their own homeland.

We call= for an immediate end to the repression and human rights violations against= the opposition movement". =20 The group referred to military and police attacks against members of the te= acher's union=2C COPEMH (Colegio de Profesores de Educaci=F3n Media de Hond= uras (Association of Secondary Teachers of Honduras))=2C and their supporte= rs=2C which took place at The National Pedagogical University Francisco Mor= azan in Tegucigalpa on August 26 and 27. The union has been on strike since= May=2C and is generally viewed as opposing the regime of Honduran Presiden= t Porfirio Lobo. The HSN based its action on reports received from the huma= n rights group COFADEH and the General Workers' Central Federation (CGT) la= bor organization=2C and corroborated by local news from Radio Globo and eye= witness accounts that report the following: =20 On Friday=2C Aug. 27=2C police and military troops surrounded the National = Pedagogical University=2C responding to thousands of teachers and members o= f trade unions=2C peasant organizations and other organizations supportive = of the teachers gathered on the university grounds. The police and military= forces sprayed tear gas from trucks and beat protesters with truncheons be= fore firing canisters of tear gas into the University grounds. As people we= re overcome by the gas and tried to leave=2C they were beaten and many deta= ined. Among the injured were two well-known reporters from Radio Globo=2C o= ne of the few independent radio stations in the country. Among those seriou= sly affected by the gas were a number of children and pregnant women. =20 On Thursday=2C the police and military attacked the same group at a massive= protest near the presidential residency in the capital city. Television st= ations aired video showing soldiers firing their rifles during the repressi= ve action and police beating protesters. Four teachers from the teachers' u= nion were seriously injured and=2C according to human rights organizations = in Honduras=2C they were denied medical care at the main public hospital in= Tegucigalpa. The teachers' union then took the men to a private medical fa= cility. =20 On Aug. 20=2C four leaders of the teachers' union were badly injured when p= olice attacked them during a union march. The men were detained at a police= station for 12 hours during which time they were denied medical care and h= uman rights observers were refused entry to the jail to verify their condit= ion. =20 Throughout the month of August the level of conflict and the human rights c= risis in Honduras has deepened. Non-violent protesters in Choloma were beat= en=2C and three members of peasant organizations in Aguan were killed. Anot= her journalist=2C critical of the regime=2C was murdered bringing to ten th= e total of journalists murdered since Lobo took over in January. =20 Vicki Cervantes=2C a spokesperson for the Honduras Solidarity Network said= =2C "The United States government continues its support for the oligarchy a= nd Lobo in the form of aid and pressure on other governments in the hemisph= ere to accept the illegitimate Lobo administration." =20 Meanwhile=2C on the ground in Honduras the opposition of the majority of Ho= ndurans to the coup and the subsequent regimes=2C including Lobo's=2C is gr= owing. REPRESSION IN HONDURAS CONTINU= ES=2C UNABATED
By Karen Spring=2C August 31=2C 2010 (spring.kj@gmail.com)
 =3B
Last Thursday and Friday (Aug 26-27)=2C police and military violently = repressed public school teachers that have taken to the streets for almost = 3 weeks to demand=2C amongst other things=2C that the Pepe Lobo regime retu= rn 4 billion lempiras (or some 200 million dollars) that were taken from Na= tional Institute of IMPREMA=2C an institution that manages teacher's pensio= n funds=2C after the military-oligarchic coup against President Zelaya on J= une 28=2C 2009.
 =3B
The 6 teachers unions that form the umbrella organization FOMH - that = represents 63=2C000 teachers nation-wide - believe that the funds taken fro= m this institution were used to fund the military regime=2C after the June = 2009 coup headed by Roberto Micheletti and General Romeo Vasquez Valesquez= =2C that repressed and terrorized the pro-democracy movement critical of th= e coup and it's perpetrators.
 =3B
The education system in Honduras has been in crisis for the last 4 mon= ths particularly the month of August starting when the university students = occupied the National Autonomous University (UNAH=2C Spanish acronym) deman= ding the reinstatement of 180 workers fired from their positions and the re= signation of university director=2C Julieta Castrellano. Five fired workers= still remain on hunger strike on the university grounds=2C some now reachi= ng over 126 days without eating.
 =3B
During the university occupation=2C police showed up during the occupa= tion and attempted to enter the university where they were then run off uni= versity grounds by the protesters. The stand off between the students and p= olice occurred at the time that State Department's Maria Otero was visiting= Honduras to investigate the human rights situation=2C an attempt once agai= n by the United States government to paint the picture that the Lobo govern= ment is working hard to better the human rights situation in the country=2C= a necessary condition to having Honduras readmitted into the Organization = of American States (OAS).

 =3B
Although the university student and the public school teachers have di= fferent immediate focuses and demands=2C they both claim that the form in w= hich the Pepe Lobo's regime is managing the teacher's struggle and educatio= n system in general is one of the many attempts by the oligarchy and the go= vernment to privatize the public education system in Honduras.
 =3B
Recognizing this threat=2C this massive teachers strike converges with= and compliments the on-going struggle of the National Front of Popular Res= istance (FNRP) as well as the preparatory stages of a mass general strike i= nvolving the three major umbrella unions (Unitary Confederacy of Workers of= Honduras (CUTH=2C by its Spanish acronym)=3B the Confederacy of Workers of= Honduras (CTH)=3B the General Head office of Workers (CGT) to which all un= ionized Honduran workers belong.

3 DAYS OF HARSH REPRESSION AGAINST THE TEACHERS
Last Friday August 27th=2C teachers were violently evicted twice from = the area around the National Pedagogical University=3B first=2C when they h= ad occupied the boulevard and second=2C when teachers were regrouping and m= eeting inside the University.
 =3B
At the University=2C located close to a major boulevard and across fro= m a business shopping centre=2C police arrived with 2 water tanks=2C firing= more than a 100 tear gas canisters and rubber bullets at the teachers and = members of the resistance movement in and outside the university grounds=2C= beating up those they chased and captured without regard for the presence = of children and the public in the busy area of the city and the peaceful fo= rm in which the teachers were protesting.

 =3B
Over 100 people were captured and 'guarded' by police against a fence = outside the University. They were later released after human rights represe= ntatives arrived and negotiated with the police. Many teachers and resistan= ce members=2C fleeing the tear gas=2C were trapped inside the classrooms in= the university where they suffered from severe exposure to tear gas. Over = 7 people were injured from the gas and from police beatings including a jou= rnalist from Globo TV/Radio Globo.

 =3B
The day before=2C on Thursday=2C after occupying a street close to the= Presidential Palace in Tegucigalpa=2C police and military violently evicte= d the teachers. Six teachers were reported injured from the tear gas and wo= unds inflicted by the police.
 =3B
These two days=2C last week=2C were the icing on the cake to the viole= nce inflicted against the teachers movement on August 20th=2C when again=2C= police/military evicted the movement and brutally beat up 3 union leaders = and one teacher that all were supposedly identified on the spot to the poli= ce by individuals infiltrated in the marches.
 =3B
Before and particularly since August 20th=2C the major media outlets o= wned by the oligarchy continue a media campaign against the teacher's movem= ent to portray them as instruments of violence with no regard for children'= s education and the educational system in Honduras.
 =3B
At the writing of this article=2C the teachers are gathered in their d= aily assembly to discuss an agreement recently negotiated between the Gover= nment negotiation team and the leaders of the teacher's movement. Today=2C = the teachers will announce whether they accept the proposal or not.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION<= /STRONG>
By the Honduras Solidarity Network
Contact: Vicki Cervantes=2C vickicervantes@yahoo.com
 =3B
A coalition of North American organizations today denounced the exerci= se of violent repression by Honduran military and police forces against mem= bers of a striking teacher's union at a university in Tegucigalpa.
 =3B
The Honduras Solidarity Network (HSN) declared that "the recent brutal= attacks by government forces against non-violent protests show that there = has been no reconciliation after last year's coup d'etat=2C and the U.S. go= vernment's policy of support for the current government must be changed. We= call for an immediate end to the repression and human rights violations ag= ainst the opposition movement".
 =3B
The group referred to military and police attacks against members of t= he teacher's union=2C COPEMH (Colegio de Profesores de Educaci=F3n Media de= Honduras (Association of Secondary Teachers of Honduras))=2C and their sup= porters=2C which took place at The National Pedagogical University Francisc= o Morazan in Tegucigalpa on August 26 and 27. The union has been on strike = since May=2C and is generally viewed as opposing the regime of Honduran Pre= sident Porfirio Lobo. The HSN based its action on reports received from the= human rights group COFADEH and the General Workers' Central Federation (CG= T) labor organization=2C and corroborated by local news from Radio Globo an= d eyewitness accounts that report the following:
 =3B
On Friday=2C Aug. 27=2C police and military troops surrounded the Nati= onal Pedagogical University=2C responding to thousands of teachers and memb= ers of trade unions=2C peasant organizations and other organizations suppor= tive of the teachers gathered on the university grounds. The police and mil= itary forces sprayed tear gas from trucks and beat protesters with truncheo= ns before firing canisters of tear gas into the University grounds. As peop= le were overcome by the gas and tried to leave=2C they were beaten and many= detained. Among the injured were two well-known reporters from Radio Globo= =2C one of the few independent radio stations in the country. Among those s= eriously affected by the gas were a number of children and pregnant women.<= /DIV>
 =3B
On Thursday=2C the police and military attacked the same group at a ma= ssive protest near the presidential residency in the capital city. Televisi= on stations aired video showing soldiers firing their rifles during the rep= ressive action and police beating protesters. Four teachers from the teache= rs' union were seriously injured and=2C according to human rights organizat= ions in Honduras=2C they were denied medical care at the main public hospit= al in Tegucigalpa. The teachers' union then took the men to a private medic= al facility.
 =3B
On Aug. 20=2C four leaders of the teachers' union were badly injured w= hen police attacked them during a union march. The men were detained at a p= olice station for 12 hours during which time they were denied medical care = and human rights observers were refused entry to the jail to verify their c= ondition.
 =3B
Throughout the month of August the level of conflict and the human rig= hts crisis in Honduras has deepened. Non-violent protesters in Choloma were= beaten=2C and three members of peasant organizations in Aguan were killed.= Another journalist=2C critical of the regime=2C was murdered bringing to t= en the total of journalists murdered since Lobo took over in January.
 =3B
Vicki Cervantes=2C a spokesperson for the Honduras Solidarity Network = said=2C "The United States government continues its support for the oligarc= hy and Lobo in the form of aid and pressure on other governments in the hem= isphere to accept the illegitimate Lobo administration."
 =3B
Meanwhile=2C on the ground in Honduras the opposition of the majority = of Hondurans to the coup and the subsequent regimes=2C including Lobo's=2C = is growing. For the first time since 1954=2C Honduran trade union federatio= ns have all agreed to prepare for a general strike and nearly a million Hon= duran eligible voters have signed letters demanding the convocation of a co= nstituent constitutional assembly with the peoples' participation and leade= rship.
 =3B
The Honduras Solidarity Network=2C a nationwide coalition of non-profi= t=2C human rights and educational organizations=2C and the Honduran Front f= or National Resistance (FRNP) call for:
 =3B
an end to police and military repression of the teachers and the prote= sters at the university=3B
resumption of negotiations between the government and the Teacher's Un= ion=3B
payment of back wages and an investigation into the violation of the t= eachers' human rights.

SAMPLE LETTER&= nbsp=3B
Dear ???=2C
 =3B
Non-violent protests by striking teachers and democracy supporters in = Honduras have been attacked in recent days by the military and police causi= ng many injuries and detentions.
 =3B
On Aug. 26 and Aug. 27 the Honduran military and police attacked demon= strators gathered at the National Pedagogical University Francisco Morazan = in Tegucigalpa firing many rounds of tear gas and live bullets. When those = trapped in the university tried to escape the tear gas=2C they were beaten= =2C including pregnant women and at least two journalists.
 =3B
Until the brutal repression of social movements in Honduras ends=2C I = demand that the Government:
 =3B
Suspend all aid to the Lobo administration
Stop the U.S. (or Canadian) government lobbying for recognition of the= undemocratic government of Honduras.
Recognize the Honduran people's demand for a Constituent Assembly to e= stablish a functioning=2C participatory democracy.
 =3B
I look forward to hearing from you about what you and your office are = doing about this.

Sincerely=2C

Canadian Boat to G= aza

The time has come to= send a Canadian Boat to Gaza (
http://www.canadaboatgaza.org) this fall=2C along with other ships heading to the besieg= ed strip from all around the world. But we need your support to make it hap= pen.

This Canadian = Boat to Gaza project has two objectives. First=2C it will inform Canadians = about what Israel is doing to the people of Gaza and to all of the Palestin= ian people. =3B With your support=2C this awareness campaign will be ac= hieved through outreach=2C organizing and media work that encourages Canadi= ans and their organizations to support the Canadian Boat to Gaza's mission.=

Second=2C the Canadian Boat to Gaza will undermine the blockade by = shipping vital supplies into Gaza and returning with exports made in Gaza -= thus asserting the right of Palestinians in Gaza to trade with the world= =2C rather than be at the mercy of international aid. We will carry humanit= arian aid that Canadians donate. =3B The boat will also carry =3B C= anadian public figures and activists trained in non-violence=2C who are com= mitted to breaking the siege of Gaza=2C as well as journalists and reporter= s.

Our mission is part of the next Gaza boat flotilla=2C working in = cooperation with the Free Gaza Movement (
http://www.freegaza.org) which has sent and coordinated many boats to break the si= ege of Gaza over the past years.

The Canadian Boat to Gaza is a peac= eful humanitarian mission -- a people-to-people non-violent direct-action W= e sail with the spirit of promoting human rights for all and the conviction= that there can be no peace without justice. Today=2C Palestinian people ar= e counting on us to help them realize their rights we take for granted - to= live in peace=2C make a living=2C enjoy free movement=2C and control their= own boarders. =3B We do not represent any government and our relations= hip with any state or government will not go beyond what is mandated by mar= itime law.

The estimated cost of this mission is $300=2C000. Raising= this sum will depend on the generosity of those of us who can afford to ma= ke substantial =3B donations such as $1=2C000 or $500 dollars=2C but ev= ery dollar counts and every donation is valuable=2C =3B so please give = what you can.
