Departments are supposed to post on their Web Pages and notify the Union by=
May 1 the list of courses being offered to Contract Instructors for the Fa= ll and Winter terms of 2011-12. Here is a report card as of April 27, 2011=
as to who has posted and who has not. Two departments have notified the Un= ion in the last 24 hours, and more will likely come tomorrow.
If your department has not listed as having posted positions, contact them = to make sure they do, and to let us know if that is the case. I copy below = the list the e-mail we sent out a couple of weeks ago about the other chang= es in the hiring process and what you as a Contract Instructor must do.

One of the many positive outcomes of the last round of collective bargainin= g is a clarification of the hiring process for Contract Instructors at Carl= eton University. What is new is put in bold.
By May 1st, all Departments must post ALL Fall and Winter Contract Instruct= or positions, including course title and number, required qualifications, a= pplication procedure, and deadline:
* on the departmental website
* on departmental bulletin boards
* in writing or by e-mail to CUPE 4600
PLEASE NOTE: These rules apply to all available courses and Contract Instru=
ctors, including those with incumbents.
Job postings must remain up for a minimum of 21 days. (If your department h=
as not posted this information prior to May 1st, please contact CUPE 4600 b=
y mailing CUPE4600@carleton.ca
All applicants, including incumbents, must apply with an updated CV once co=
urses are posted in order to be eligible for a position
You have seven (7) days to respond to an offer of a course.
Excerpt from the CUPE 4600 Unit 2 Contract Instructor Collective Agreement:
ARTICLE 15 - POSTINGS AND APPLICATIONS
15.1 Except as provided in Article 17, all positions shall be advertised an=
d applications solicited in accordance with this Article. The Employer shal=
l distribute a summary of the relevant collective agreement provisions, as =
agreed upon by the Joint Committee for the Administration of the Collective=
Agreement, to those directly involved in the hiring of Contract Instructor=
s.
15.2 (a) Departments that anticipate offering courses to Contract Instructo=
rs in the following term(s) shall post a notice on the departmental website=
and bulletin boards and send an electronic copy to the Union, listing such=
courses and inviting applications, in writing, for specific courses.
(b) Departments that anticipate hiring Contract Instructors shall post thei=
r notices and send a copy to the Union by May 1st for courses being offered=
for the following fall and winter and by December 15th for courses being o=
ffered in the summer.
(c) Notices shall be posted for at least twenty-one (21) calendar days on d=
epartmental bulletin boards and on departmental websites, with a copy to th=
e Union. Each notice shall include: (i) the course number, title and descri=
ption; (ii) the qualifications required for the position, (iii) the deadlin=
e and procedure for application
15.3 All applicants must apply to the Department Head in writing and in=
relation to each course for which they wish to be considered. All applicat=
ions must include an up to date CV, including a complete listing of all cou=
rses taught within the CUPE 4600 Unit 2 bargaining unit at Carleton Univers=
ity. Applicants shall not be required to submit more than one (1) CV to eac=
h department.
15.4 The Employer shall endeavour to make offers of employment sufficie=
ntly in advance of the commencement of the course to provide adequate time =
for preparation. Where practicable, offers shall be made at least eight (8)=
weeks prior to the first scheduled class. An offer of employment is not va=
lid unless it is signed by the Department Chair and the Dean. It becomes a =
contract when it is then signed by the employee.
15.5 Applicants shall reply in writing by email, fax, or priority post =
to be received by the department within seven (7) calendar days of receipt =
of an offer of employment.
